We had 40 teams participate in the FPYC All Star Tournament. Everyone had a great time!
Attached is a picture after our U8B All-Star tournament yesterday. We were the “Red Warriors”, aka “VYS Black”.
We were undefeated, and won our division – barely edging out our brethren on “VYS Yellow”! Go Vienna! - Coach Matt Hederstrom
The Vienna "Green" U8 Boys all star team went 3-1 in the FPYC Fathers Day All-Star Tournament outscoring their opponents 37-16. The "Green" team played Burke winning 10-0, Annandale winning 13-6, Great Falls winning 10-3 and losing a closer than the score indicated game against Barca Premier, 7-4 in their final game.
The "Green" players had a great tournament with many fantastic soccer moments for every player. The "Green" All-Stars are: Front: Matt H, Liam O, Patrick R, Back: Benjamin C, Darius R, Alex Y, Grey K, Not Pictured: Federico C-K.
I coached the U9 girls team that was placed in U9 Girls White. We came out of the tournament with 4 points with a record of 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie.
Our girls played their hearts out, shifting into many different positions and being persistent to the ball all the time. VYS was well represented by the following players: Lauren Ellis, Liz Faughnan, Nicole Hartogs, Katie HIndin, Genevieve Kopp, Zoe Nimmo, Willa Riesenhuber, Haley Spoden, Adeline Suryabudi and Naomi Yoon.
The girls quickly formed a well running soccer family (called the Red Bulls) and made great friends in the process. Much thanks to Peter Hartogs for assistant coaching and Rini Indrawati for managing the team.

Here is a pic of U9 Boys All stars VYS White led by Coach Tad Lee in the FPYC Father's Day Tournament. The team went 3-0 to make the finals, where they barely lost 2-1 to a strong SYC North team. Go Vienna!
The U10 Boys Spartans had a fantastic two weeks. From the start of the first practice, to the final whistle of the last game, the boys played with a ton of heart, but also SKILL.....and made a lot of new friends in the process.
They won their first game against BRYC 4-1...then tied Annandale 3-3 in the afternoon. Sunday morning they collected another win against NVSC 4-2....but as (bad) luck would have it, did not advance to the Final based on goal differential to the Annandale team that ultimately won the championship.......so close!
The coaches and parents were proud of the way they represented VYS....they played hard, fair, and well!
U10 Girls Vienna White Champions from the FCPS All Star Tournament this past weekend. The girls all played tough and had a great time. It was wonderful to see them work together as a team and to see each of their individual talents shine on the field. UNDEFEATED!!!
The U11 Girls Vienna Red Team had a great weekend of soccer this Father’s Day. The team went undefeated in the round robin play to earn a spot in the finals. The final game was a back and forth contest with Vienna taking an early lead 1-0 at the half. During the second half, the lead changed, but Vienna was able to tie it up 2-2. However, in the end, Vienna couldn’t muster enough offense and fell 3-2. In this picture, all the girls show off their second place trophies. In a world ruled by soccer, our journey began. 11 boys, two coaches, proudly we represented as Vienna Boys Blue. Practice hard we did to get ready for the games. From the very first whistle, we gave it our all. Win we did not nor did we lose, but three ties we achieved, coming from behind in two. As the final whistle blew, exhausted and tired we unanimously concluded that fun was had by all! Go Blue!

After suffering heartbreaking PK losses in the past two All-Star Tournaments, U14G Vienna United finally finished on top with a dominant performance throughout the weekend. We entered the tournament on Saturday facing Chantilly, the team that beat us in the championship game last spring in PKs, and won 4-0. Our next opponent NVSC gave us a little more trouble, but our defense held strong and we pulled off a 3-0 victory. Sunday came around and we posted our third shutout by defeating PWSI 3-0 in a very physical match.
In the championship game, we faced SOTH, a team we had beaten last fall in the quarterfinals. About halfway through the first half, we opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, SOTH answered after a failed clear in the box. We went into halftime tied 1-1, having some flashbacks of seasons past. However, this season would be different. Less than a minute into the 2nd half, we scored our 2nd goal to go up 2-1, and never looked back. We went on to finish 5-2 to claim the all elusive title.
This was a team win in all aspects of the game. Here are the highlight stats:
- We outscored our opponents 15-2
- Of our 9 midfielders and strikers, 8 different players scored goals
- Our defense didn’t concede a goal until the final, posting 3 straight shutouts in the qualifying games
To make the tournament even sweeter, we had the opportunity to cheer on our sister team Vienna White (coached by Joe Jenkins and Scott Holec) to victory in their bracket to complete the VYS sweep of the U14 Girls division. They were our “sparring partner” throughout the All-Star preparation, and are a huge reason why our girls were so well prepared for the tournament. They also went undefeated outscoring their opponents 13-2, and winning their final 5-0. I could not be more proud of both of our teams for being the only club in our division to go undefeated, outscoring our opponents with a combined score of 28-4, and posting 6 shutouts in 8 games.
Way to go Vienna!!!
