Referee Training

Vienna Youth Soccer hires certified referees to officiate play in its recreational House Soccer Program. Recreational house league play is an excellent learning environment and opportunity for new referees to begin their careers and to develop their skills as a soccer referee. Individuals age 12 (must be in 7th grade) or older interested in becoming a soccer referee are encouraged to pursue referee training and certification. Parent/Child referee teams are common and a superb family activity. As your skills improve, you can pursue advanced training and certification to serve at more competitive levels of play. Referees improve their knowledge of soccer, enjoy much soccer action and outdoor exercise, and earn a fee while serving the most popular game in the world.

New referees must attend 16 hours of instruction, pass a certification test, and purchase a uniform. To help offset these initial expenses, VYS will reimburse new referees $25 after they have served 5 VYS games, and will reimburse the full certification fee after serving 10 VYS games.

To locate referee training and certification clinics in our area (North), see the Clinic Listing on the Metro DC-Virginia State Referee Program website. Request area North to list upcoming clinics in our area. Follow the clinic instructions noted to enroll for New Referee training or advanced training. After you have completed referee training and passed the certification test, e-mail the VYS Referee Assignor to register for assignment as a VYS referee.

New Grade 9 Referee Classes

VYS will sponsor two new referee classes this winter. The first is designed for those of you who have lots of time committed during the week and runs on three Fridays in a row, the other for those of you who are able/willing to commit a short amount of time to a very intensive course and runs for 3 nights over 6 days. Both classes will quality anyone who is at least 12 years old or entering the 7th grade next year to be a referee for recreational games at the U-14 level (if you meet the VYS age requirements), or to be an assistant referee for all levels, in other words, a “grade 9” referee. (Grade 1 referees are

FIFA international referees. The referees you usually see at VYS games are either grade 9 or 8. The “grade” bears no relationship to your grade in school.)

The first class will run for three Friday nights in a row – January 8, 15, and 22. The second class will run March 3, 5, and 8. Your MUST attend all three classes to become certified. All classes meet 6:30-9:30 each night in the Lecture Hall at Thoreau Middle School.

To register go to www.vadcsoccerref.com – register first as a grade 9 referee (cost $65.00) AND then register for a class. This is a two-step process and you must complete both steps in order to be properly registered. After you have registered, please contact the instructor, Diane Florkowski, at dflorkowski@cox.net to ensure you have completed the process correctly.

If you have any questions, please contact Diane Florkowski by e-mail  at dflorkowski@cox.net
