For the first time ever, a Vienna Youth Soccer team has won a Regional Championship. The Premier Red U12 Boys defeated another Virginia team, the Great Falls Cougars, 2-0 at the US Youth Soccer Regional Championships on Sunday in Huntington, West Virginia. The victory earned Premier Red the title of Region I National Soccer Champions.
Premier Red opened regional play in thrilling fashion rallying to score two goals in the final six minute of play to tie Eastern NY. Premier Red kept that momentum going in its next two games, defeating Delaware 6-0 and Rhode Island 5-1 to win their group and advance to the semifinals. It was a tough battle against Eastern NY’s runner-up team in the semis, but Premier Red came away with 2-0 victory to advance to the title game.
The Great Falls Cougars defeated Maine’s second team, as well as Vermont and New York-West before beating Maine’s State Champion for the right to play Premier Red in the Championship game.
This was the second time Premier Red and Great Falls had squared off in USYS National Championship Series. These teams faced each other in the Virginia State Championship game in June, with Premier Red coming out on top 3-0. By making the title game at the state level, both teams qualified for the right to advance to the Regional Championship event in Huntington; Premier Red as Virginia State Champion and Great Falls Cougars as runner up.
State pride was on display as Premier Red and Great Falls faced each other in the title game. Fans of both teams cheered "Go Virginia" prior to the kick off. The teams are not only from the same state, they also play in Division 1 of the same local NCSL league, speaking volumes for the high quality of youth soccer currently being played in the Washington D.C. area. After an hour of fierce soccer play and competition by both teams, Premier Red was victorious with a 2-0 score and claimed the title of Region 1 Champions.
