VIENNA, VA – February 16, 2015 – Vienna Youth Soccer, Inc. (“VYS”) announced today that Hank Leung has joined the club’s technical staff to help oversee the expansion of the girls program in the older age groups.

hank leungLeung is a former U.S. Women’s National Team and U.S. Women’s U-19 Youth National Team coach who won the NCAA collegiate women’s soccer championship in 1985 with George Mason University.  A member of the D.C.-Virginia Soccer Hall of Fame and the former Director of Coaching at the Virginia Youth Soccer Association and the Eastern Pennsylvania Senior and Youth Soccer Associations, Leung is a three-time winner of the National Coach of the Year honor awarded by the NCAA, the W-League, and U.S. Youth Soccer, respectively.

“It is not every day that you have the opportunity to bring someone of Hank’s caliber into a youth soccer club,” said VYS President Mike Allen.  “With Hank at the helm of our girls’ program in the older age groups, and with the announcement of our recent partnership with the Washington Spirit, the future has never looked brighter for our girls program.”

Leung’s coaching experience is as deep as it is varied.  He has coached at every level of the U.S. soccer pyramid, including as a professional coach with the Philadelphia Fury of the North American Soccer League and a semi-professional coach with the Northern Virginia Majestics.  In addition to his stint in the collegiate ranks at George Mason, he more recently served as the technical advisor for Shenandoah University and MIT.  At MIT, he helped that squad to just its second NCAA Tournament berth in program history.

Leung is also widely regarded as one of the top youth soccer coaches in the U.S., with a long and well-established track record of player development that makes him a natural fit for VYS.  He has served as the Executive Director of the Michigan Phoenix Soccer Club, the Director of Player Development at FC Virginia, and the head coach of various Region I and II Olympic Development teams.  His youth teams have won numerous state, regional and national championships.

“The energy, passion, and vision that Hank brings to our program, let alone his deep base of coaching knowledge and his extensive contacts throughout the soccer world, is second to none,” said VYS Vice-President of Travel Ryan Phair.  “We are truly fortunate to have him on board.”

Leung currently serves as the coach of VYS U15G Patriots Black, which he helped lead to the Virginia State Cup Semifinals this past fall.  He will be formally joining the VYS technical staff this upcoming spring season to help oversee the launch of a new project to expand and further develop the VYS girls program in the older age groups.

“What a magical time to be a part of VYS!  The evident commitment to reach beyond what was ever imagined before is magnetic to anyone that has any vision at all,” said Leung.  “The creative process is just exploding with this new venture, and the opportunities for VYS players at all levels have never been better.  I am honored that VYS has included me in this project and am committed to seeing the dream come to fruition.”

A native of New York City who traces his family roots back to China, Leung holds both the U.S. Soccer “A” and National Youth Licenses, and he has attended the UEFA Pro License.  He is also a graduate of the FIFA International Academy and the KNVB (Dutch Soccer Federation) International Coaching Course.

“VYS is committed to building a top-notch professional coaching staff who will bring together our emphasis on excellence, character, passion, and player development for all players in the VYS community,” added Ryan Phair.  “Hank’s hiring is the first of what we hope will be a wave of top technical advisors and youth coaches who will soon be coming to Vienna to help us further that mission.”
