We had a great turnout for the start of the TOPSoccer season on Saturday, April 16. Thanks to Inova Sports Medicine and all the buddies, coaches, players and parents for coming out and making it a great day!
We started the day with buddies training. Buddies (volunteers) came out early to receive training on how to work with players with disabilities and to participate in warmup exercises led by Inova Sports Medicine athletic trainers.
After buddies training, players and parents started arriving and the fun began!
The first session was more of a developmental time. Several buddies are paired off to work with TOPSoccer player to provide the right amount of attention and focus as needed. Several types and sizes of soccer balls were used to teach players how to dribble and shoot and just have fun playing soccer.
The later 4pm session was devoted to games. Players with ease of movement got into teams and played a scrimmage. It was friendly, no-score game supervised and reffed by TOPSoccer Director Bob Zadeh. Several buddies also got in on the fun!
We learned that soccer is a universal language, not just across cultures and languages, but also for players who don't allow their disabilities to hinder them from learning and enjoying the beautiful game. Thanks to all the buddies for their boundless energy, caring and dedication to this program.
