kevin james Technical Director Kevin James is the Head Coach for the U9 and U10 Red boys teams. Kevin has a broad range of soccer management experience, serving most recently as the Technical Director of the Culpeper Soccer Association and in the past, as the Academy Director of the Culpeper Soccer Association and the Camp Director for Future Soccer Pro. He has been the Head Coach and Program Director at Fauquier High School, the Assistant Coach at Middleburg Academy, and an Assistant Head Coach for the VYSA-Olympic Development Program (ODP). He holds a US Soccer B License, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and a US Soccer National "Youth" License.

 

michel vanderhartDirector of Coaching Michel Vanderhart is the Head Coach for the U18 and U19 Phoenix girls teams. As the VYS Director of Coaching U13-U19, he helps to develop and implement the VYS coaching curriculum and is responsible for supervising and overseeing the head coaches and assistant coaches within the girls travel program. His Super Y experience includes coaching 2 teams at the North American Super Y Finals, winning a Championship and one semi-final berth. Michel is a long time Vienna resident with an intimate knowledge of the Northern Virginia soccer landscape. Michel earned a PhD in economics from Texas A&M University. He currently holds a USSF B license and is a former VYSA Coach of the Year. Michel is also a Head Coach for the Washington Spirit VA Academy whose teams compete in the Super Y league.

 

Steve LehanyDirector of House Programs Steve Lehany is the Head Coach for the U19 boys and the U10 girls Red teams. Steve comes to Vienna with a background of youth, college and semi-pro soccer level experience. As a youth player, he has been a member of the Plymouth Argyle FC Academy and Bristol Rovers FC Academy. At the age of 16, he began playing semi-professional soccer for Weston-Super-Mare FC while pursuing a degree at Weston College in Sport and Exercise Science. During the course, he also became involved in coaching, working with college players and Weston-Super-Mare FC. Steve earned a B.S. Degree in Sports Studies at the University of Glamorgan. He has a Level 3 Coaching Certificate (UEFA B).

 

John Babbitt is the Head Coach for the U11 White and U12 Silver boys team. He has been with VYS since June 2016. His coaching experience spans many years and includes Emerald City FC Coaching Clinic; Bishop Denis J O’Connell Junior Varsity Coach; Alexandria Soccer Association Travel Coach; and Virginia District ODP Tryout Evaluator. His playing experience is extensive including Region IV ODP Team 2005-2007, US Youth National Team Pool, Dominican University of California 2007-2009, and The Evergreen State College 2009-2010. He holds 3 licenses: USSF F, USSF E, and USSF D.

Bill Bak is the Head Coach for the U11 and U12 Black boys team. His coaching experiences are far reaching with clubs, high schools and universities in Virginia and Maryland: Manassas Team America Premier, Bethesda Soccer Club, Soccer Association of Columbia, Olney Boys and Girls Club, Langley High School, G.C. Marshall High School, USNA Annapolis, and James Madison University. He has played for several clubs including Sportverein Sachsenhausen 1894, Alexandria Kickers ’66, Bethesda Soccer Club and Eintracht Frankfurt, the last 2 being national champions. His licenses include DFB Federation level 1/current C license, USSF National D license, and USC/NSCAA National License.

Andrew Carver is the Head Coach of the U11 Silver and the U12 White boys teams. He has worked for VYS since 2015 coaching the U11 and u12 boys and girls teams. He has coached at various levels including Hartwick College Women’s and Men’s Soccer Teams, Oneonta, NY; FC Dutchmen (U-17 Boys), Guilderland, NY; Davis & Elkins College Men’s Soccer Team, Elkins, WV; and Richmond Kickers Soccer Club (U-9 to U-11), Richmond, VA. He has played North American Soccer League, NASL Combine Invitee, Fort Lauderdale, FL in 2011 and PASL Edwards Freedom, Vail, CO in 2009–2011 receiving Team MVP in 2011 and Defensive MVP in 2010. Andrew has a B.A. in Communication Studies, minor in History from Christopher Newport University and a M.S. in Sports Management with Honors from American Public University. He holds licenses in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier Diploma, an Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma, and a U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) C.

John Ciampa is the Head coach of U9 White and U10 Black boys teams. He played for the DC United U18 men’s team and was a standout player for the College of William and Mary. John has a USSF D License.

Kathy Clark is the Head Coach for the U13 and U15 Black girls teams. She has been a VYS Travel head coach since Fall 2015 and has worked with the 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 age groups. Kathy was the Head Coach at Oakton High School from February 1997–June 2001 where she led the Varsity team to five consecutive regional tournament appearances and was selected as the Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year in 1999. She served as the Assistant Head Women’s Coach at Catholic University of America, 1993–1995, and Girls Assistant Coach at James Madison High School Girls in 1992. Washington Area Girls Soccer and National Capital Soccer League, 1992 – 1999 coached and trained several boys and girls teams from various clubs, 6–16 years. Guilford College Women’s Soccer - Four-year varsity starter, 1987-1990 Oakton High School - Four-year varsity starter, 1982-1986; Honors: Co-Captain, Team MVP, All-Region Selection WAGS, Vienna Redwings - Eight years in WAGS Division One; 1982 Virginia State Champions.

Josh de Dios is the Head Coach of U11 girls and U14 boys White teams. Josh began coaching in 2010 during his time at Old Dominion University where he graduated with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. He began coaching in U4-U6 Development programs and shortly after he was given the opportunity to work with U7-U10 teams. He grew up in the Northern Virginia area and graduated from South County Secondary in Lorton, Virginia. His past playing experience includes time at various travel clubs in the area and most recently at the collegiate level. He holds a U.S. Soccer C License.

Allan Flott is the Head Coach for the U14 and U16 Black boys teams. His experience in soccer begin in High School when he played for DC United and then played at West Virginia University. Allan has traveled the world playing soccer. My education was from some of the highest level of coaches in the United States during my time in DC United and the collegiate level, including my time in professional clubs training.

Oliver (Oli) Freeman is the Head Coach for U14 and U16 Red boys teams. He is from London, England where he played soccer in elementary school, middle school where he represented his local cup team, and high school where he was invited to play for the Fulham Football Club Junior Academy. The Fulham FC is in the English Premier League (EPL). He received a very high level of coaching and was surrounded by the best players in South West London. Oli has spent the last four years coaching and learning the game. He has coached in Pittsburgh, head coach of 3 teams at the North United Club, likely the most successful team in the PA West region. He has worked with a player development organization called QuikSkills. In the UK, he has coached for the Chelsea FC, who has one of the most advanced training facilities in Europe. Oli has my Level 2 coaching badge, which is the equivalent to a USSF Level C coaching badge.

Ross Jervis is the Head Coach for the U9 and U10 White girls teams. Originally from the UK, he has worked with every age group possible and coached soccer around the world in China, Singapore, South Africa, Canada and the UK. Directed 50+ Soccer Camps, coached more than 60 Mini Soccer and First Kicks programs since 2012, Challenger Sports Baltimore Region Lifetime Achievement Award 2016. He has been playing soccer from 4-5 years for my local team Rainhill United until 14. He began playing a few years ago three seasons for a local team called Clock Face Miners in England. During the two years in California, he played for a Sunday league adult team in Grass Valley, CA, and in 2014, he played for an adult team in State College, PA. Ross attended the University of Chester, UK. He holds several licenses: FA Level 2 Coaching Badge, FA Youth Award Module 1, Learning Mentor Level 3 Certified, Heads Up – Concussion in Youth Sports for Coaches, Shield The Vulnerable – Protect Children (Maryland).

Richard Landis is the Head Coach for the U14 Black girls team. He has been a travel coach with VYS for the past 3 years. He coached the U16 Washington Spirit Super Y team in 2017 and prior to that, the Real Maryland Super Y U15 girls for 2 years. Previously he has coached many elite players who went on to achieve soccer accolades and awards including an NWSL player, U.S. Women National Team members, Maryland Regional and Olympic Development Program players, a 2x Maryland High School Player-of-the-Year, All State and All Conference selections (Gazette/Washington Post) and a number who are playing in D1, D2 and D3 colleges around the country. Richard holds a USSF National D license.

Gino Leon is the Head Coach of the U17 girls Black team. He is a former professional player and has over 35 years of coaching youth soccer (club, high school, college camps, private lessons, small group training etc.), started coaching/training at a young age. He has been involved with various clubs in the area, and is also the Head Varsity coach at Bishop Ireton (fall season) in Alexandria for the last 7 years. He has been the Head Coach at Fairfax High School (spring season) for 5 years. He has placed many boys and girls onto D1 schools, and the professional ranks by developing ball skilled players and a passion for this beautiful game of soccer. Gino holds a National "B" license, a National Goalkeeping license, and a Coerver Youth Diploma.

Hank Leung is the Head Coach for the U13 and U15 Phoenix girls teams. Hank is knowledgeable, experienced and has been successful at all levels of soccer - professional, amateur, collegiate and youth, winning state, regional and national championships along the way. He joined the VYS Patriots program June 2012 as the head trainer for VYS. Since then, he has lead the Phoenix '99 to the 2015/16 Virginia State Cup Championship and semifinal appearances, two USYS Region I Championship appearances; two Virginia Premier League Championships, and two National Premier League appearances. He has developed innumerable scholarship athletes, All-Americans and national team players. Hank is a member of the Virginia-Washington, D.C. Soccer Hall of Fame and a 3-time National Coach of the Year. He was a Region II ODP Girls Staff Coach and previously has been the Region I Girls ODP Head Coach and a Region I Boys ODP Staff Coach. He is a former U.S. National Team Coach, a former U.S. National Staff Coach, a former Assistant Coach with the Philadelphia Fury of the NASL (the precursor to the MLS), and a former Director of Coaching for the VYS Association, the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association and the former Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association.

As a collegiate women’s head coach at George Mason University, Leung won a 1985 NCAA Division I National Championship. In March 2011, Hank attended the UEFA Pro Course in Estonia. In the Fall of 2011, he took on the role of Technical Advisor for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Women’s Soccer Team. They won their league tournament championship and earned an NCAA Tournament bid - only their second in the program’s history. He holds several licenses: US Soccer A, US Soccer National Youth, FIFA International Academy, KNVB International Coaching Course.

Ben Mork is the Head Coach for the U11 and U12 Red boys teams. He has been with VYS for 5 years. Ben was a 4-year starter for the men's soccer team at High Point University before playing 3 years in the USL. He has coached at the travel, high school, and ODP levels. Ben has earned two graduate degrees from George Mason University, Education and Educational Administration. He holds a USSF D license.

Keith Moser is the Head Coach the U17 and U18 Red boys teams. He is also the Head Coach for Marymount University Men’s Soccer. Prior to VYS, Keith served on the ODP staff for Maryland and Virginia and was a Head Coach at Arlington Soccer and FYPC. As a player Keith was a 4-year starter at University of North Carolina Greensboro where he won two National Championships. He holds a NSCAA Advanced National diploma.

Michael Newhall is the Head Coach for the U9 Black girls team. He has been on the VYS coaching staff since Spring 2016 and has enjoyed coaching U11 and U12 girls Academy teams. A native resident of Springfield, VA, he played travel for SYC. He attended and played varsity at Virginia Wesleyan and Newberry College where he graduated with a Sport Management degree. Michael has previously worked for J.E.B Stuart High School, Newberry High School, Newberry College and DC United. He holds a USSF F and E license and working toward earning his D.

Veronica Paz is the Head Coach for the U10 Silver girls team. She has coached with VYS for 2 years. She has played soccer since she was 2, and then played in middle school, high school, and college club soccer. Veronica was selected as the All-County female player of the year in 2009 her senior year in high school. She has a B.S. degree in psychology and political science from Radford University. She holds a F License.

Nicole Peters is the Head Coach for the U17 Phoenix and U19 Black girls teams. Joining VYS in 2012, Nicole has been coaching soccer for 5 years, and a trainer for 7, working with Golden Boot, Drake Soccer LLC and Burke Athletic Club. She is also the VYS Super Y Director. Nicole grew up playing soccer in the Northern Virginia area with the Vista Hotshots, a 4-time State Cup Finalist, with Regional, and National appearances. She played at Oakton High School where she was the team captain and a 2-time MVP with all district accolades. She went on to George Mason University where she was a 4-year starter and team captain her junior and senior years. She continues to play in adult leagues throughout the year, continuing to keep her skills and talent fresh. Nicole holds a USSF D license.

Hadi Rezazad is the Head Coach for the U19 girls Fusion team. He is also the VYSA ODP State and District Coach, VYSA Coaching Education Instructor, and VYS TOPSoccer Co-founder and Coach. He serves as the VYSA ODP Staff (State, District, Academy); Boys and Girls, Head Coach - VYS Girls Travel Teams; U13 to U19: 2008 to Present (NCSL/WAGS/ ODSL), Vienna Youth Soccer: TOPSoccer Coach: 2009 to Present, Head Coach - VYS Boys Travel Teams – U9 through U17: 2007 to 2016 (NCSL), Assistant Coach – NVSL Adult League: 1985 to 1992. His playing experience is extensive including competed in NVSL League during 1980’s and 1990’s, Member of Junior Varsity Team, American University: 1980-81; Member of High School Varsity Team: 1976-1978, and competed in various adult indoor and outdoor leagues and tournaments. Hadi has a PhD, Information Technology – George Mason University, 2009. He holds US Soccer Federation National “A” Coaching License, US Soccer Federation National Youth License, and NSCAA National Goalkeeping License

Michael Roman is the Head Coach for the U9 Black boys, U10 White boys, and U11 Phoenix girls teams. He also works with the VYS Development Center. Michael grew up in California playing for Real So Cal Soccer Club where he won three national championships, was selected for the U15 and U18 Men’s National Team, and played for the LA Galaxy U20 Team. He attended and played at UCLA and the University of Louisville where he studied Sport Administration. Michael is currently working towards his D license.

Austin Roser is the Head Coach for the U14 girls White and the U16 Black girls teams. As a member of the VYS Technical Staff, Austin is responsible for developing and implementing the Goalkeeper Program within VYS for ages U13-U16 girls and boys. A Veteran of the United States Army, and has been coaching goalkeepers for the past five years. He is the son of retired professional goalkeeper Don Roser who played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) for the Rhode Island Oceaneers. Austin has a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science and Recreation/Experiential Learning. He holds a National Youth Coaching License and NSCAA Level 3 Goalkeeper License.

Todd Spitalny is the Head coach of U13 and U15 Black boys teams. He is also the Head Boys Varsity Coach at Oakton High School. Prior to VYS, Todd coached at BYRC. His Super Y experience includes 2 trips to Super Y Finals, making one final and one semi-final. Todd holds a NSCAA Advanced National diploma.

Kailyn Slade is the Head Coach for U11 Silver and U12 White girls teams. Kailyn is in her second season coaching soccer and it has been a joy for her. She has played soccer in the DC area for about 14 years, and has played for PWCS, BRYC and Mclean during my club years. During her college years, Kailyn played Division 1 soccer at VCU for 4 years. She has a with a B.S. in Social Work, and will be finishing her M.S. in Social Work at George Mason University in May 2018. She holds a National F License.

Ed Thompson is the Head Coach for the U13 and U15 White girls teams. He has been a VYS coach for the past 7 years at both the travel and house levels. Ed has been the JV boys Head Coach at James Madison High School from 2012-2014. At Virginia Tech, Ed played soccer from 1981-1984 and served as the team captain 1983. He played with the Annandale Boys Club from 1978-1981, 3-time Virginia State Cup Champion. At the same time, he played with Lake Braddock High School Varsity from 1978-1981 and served as the team captain in 1981. Ed currently plays with a local men’s team. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Virginia Tech. He holds National C and National Youth Licenses.

Tim Venn is the Head Coach for the U9 Red and U8 Black girls teams. He has been part of the VYS coaching staff for 3 years. Prior to VYS, Tim was the girls travel head coach at SYC for 5 years and the Girls Varsity Assistant Coach and JV Head Coach at W.T. Woodson HS for 8 years. Originally from England, Tim came to attend George Washington University earning a BBA Degree in Accounting. Tim holds an USSF C License, National Youth Coaching License, NSCAA Advance Regional Diploma and National GK Diploma. He is a VHSL certified Master Athletic Coach, has a VHSL Coaching Education Diploma and NFHS certified in coaching education and sportsmanship.

Curtis Wilson is Head Coach for U11 and U12 Phoenix girls teams. Curtis also serves as the Assistant Coach for the Marymount University Women’s team. Prior to VYS, he was on the ODP Staff for the state of Virginia. Curtis has coached Super Y for 3 seasons. Curtis holds a USSF B license and a USSF National Youth Coaching License.

Roger Wimmer is the Head Coach of U13 and U15 Red boys teams. Prior to VYS, Roger served as the Head Coach of DC United’s U15 Academy team, Assistant Coach for U16, and U23 NPSL Goalkeeper Coach. He has played for George Mason University 2003 CAA Runner-Up, Charleston Southern University 2002 All Big South, and Louisburg College, 2001- First Team All Region X, First Team All South, NJCAA National Quarterfinalist and 2000- First Team All Region X, Region X Champions. Roger holds a USSF B license, a NSCAA Youth National Diploma, a NSCAA National Goalkeeper license, and NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma.

Babak Yektafar is the Head Coach for the U17 and U19 Black boys teams. He has been involved with VYS for the past 13 years in numerous capacities including age-specific commissioner and head coach. Babak is a former youth academy player for a top tier club in Iran and has played non-professional soccer for the past 40 years. Babak holds a National Youth License from US Soccer federation and a National B License also from US Soccer federation. He holds a certificate on Football (soccer) Tactics and Action Analysis from World Football Academy.

Luis Zavala is the Head Coach for the U9 and U10 Silver boys teams. He began coaching with VYS in Spring 2017. He has played soccer for RFC and Arlington FC as a youth and one year at Louisburg College, and he has trained with the Club Alianza Lima Youth Teams U15-U18. Luis has a degree in psychology from George Mason University. He holds a National E License.
