VYS Referee Mentoring Program

Every season we seem to lose about a third of our referees for a variety of reasons.

Are you asking, “Why?”

Well, we are now asking, “WHY NOT develop a program which will encourage a high return with minimum turnover?”

WHY NOT build a strong referee program by offering positive support to new and less experienced referees?

WHY NOT provide opportunities to build strong character and leadership?  And, why not do this right here in our community?

For the Referee Mentoring Program to work, we need experienced referees. We need referees with strong character and leadership to dedicate approximately four weeks of 3-4 hours each week to become Referee Mentors.

WE NEED YOU to help our youth by building a stronger soccer program in VYS.

Will you please help make a difference in our community?

What does a Referee Mentor do?

A Referee Mentor:

  1. Will guide, coach, and train new referees for the first four weeks in the season.
  2. Attends assigned game field for approximately 3-4 hours per week on Saturday.
  3. Observes referees while they referee and offer suggestions, comments and instructions in a positive manner.
  4. Is a resource person for new refs to ask questions and seek guidance.
  5. Works with the VYS Referee Mentor Coordinator, to build a solid referee program through input and evaluations.

What are the benefits of being a Referee Mentor?

  1. By sharing your wisdom, you can contribute to building an overall stronger soccer program and support a critical area of need.
  2. Through your positive leadership, you can make a difference for the youth of our community.
  3. Your commitment will be rewarded through priority choice game assignments.
  4. VYS offers monetary incentive.

New Referee Mentor Requirements

Below are the minimum requirements that should be met by any referee wishing to become a VYS referee mentor. The Director of Referees may waive one or more of these requirements at their discretion and the final decision about inclusion of a candidate in the program rests with the Director of Referees.

  1. A new mentor candidate shall be at least 18 years of age, have a current certification, have at least 4 years of experience as an active referee of at least a grade 8 level, with at least 3 years centering in a 3 man system, at least 2 of which are at a higher level than VYS House/ODSL (NCSL, High School, State Cup, etc.).
  2. A new mentor candidate will meet with the Director of Referees and the Referee Mentor Coordinator so that they may assess the candidate's suitability for the role.
  3. A new mentor candidate will be required to attend a referee mentoring session at the start of the season so that they understand what is expected of the referees and mentors.
  4. If the new mentor candidate is actively refereeing, the Director of Referees and/or the Referee Mentor Coordinator will observe the referee a minimum of 3 times as a center in a 3 man system prior to authorizing their participation as an active mentor.

Please contact the Referee Mentor Coordinator for more information and to sign up now.
