Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September 6, 2022

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer is the leading cause of death amongst children ages 4-14 in the United States; however, pediatric cancer research remains underfunded. Only 4% of The National Cancer Institute’s budget is allocated to childhood cancer research. With more funding, treatments could evolve, leading to safer practices, thus resulting in more children being saved. By increasing awareness, our hope is to help children affected in our community and others alike. Below are different ways you can show your support this month and throughout the year.

Go Gold

The symbol for childhood cancer awareness is the gold ribbon. Pinning a gold ribbon to your shirt or backpack displays  your dedication to the cause and encourages others to do the same. Don't have a ribbon? No problem... you can wear gold socks or laces throughout recreational games as well. By wearing gold, this will create a chain reaction that boosts awareness and inspires social action throughout our community.

Donate to Research

One way to impact the cause is to donate directly towards it. There are many non-profit organizations out there, dedicated to improving funding and research of medical practices. Below we have taken the liberty to outline several reputable organizations for you to look into and familiarize yourself with.

Donate Time

Non-profits can always use an extra hand benefiting from services you can provide. Find volunteer opportunities—in your neighborhood or online through VolunteerMatch. VolunteerMatch has different listings for help needed in hospitals, where you can directly work with professionals in various ways.

Participate in Events

There are numerous events you can get involved in this month. One we have found that is easy to get involved with is ACCO's GO GOLD® The RUN. This year, ACCO launched GO GOLD® The RUN for kids with cancer in May, but you can still participate throughout the month. Participation helps raise funds which the organization donates towards research. You can register here to run (or walk).

There are many components to the beautiful game we love, and unfortunately, like any sport, injuries are a part of it. While we work tirelessly to ensure our players are in top shape on and off the field, you should always be prepared for any situation. This raises the question, how do you know if an injury is readily manageable or if medical assistance is needed? Our partners and soccer specialists at The Jackson Clinics have developed a short video series for VYS outlining how to identify pain points for common soccer injuries along with the proper actions to take in order to prevent further damage. You can find all information on the proper assessments below or on our Player Performance page.
